CHECKLIST

As a new student, there is a lot to keep track of. Below we therefore provide some tips and practical information on what might be good to think about as a new student.

Central Student Finance Board (CSN)

At CSN you apply for student finance. You can keep your student finance as long as you have been registered for and taken all the courses for which you have received student finance, even if you have not achieved the study results. However, if you have taken fewer credits or courses than you have received a grant for, you will have to pay back the excess. In order to receive a new grant, you must make up the credits you missed.

Student accommodation

In Sundsvall municipality, there is a housing guarantee for full-time students at Mid Sweden University. This is mainly through Mitthem but also through other actors. There are many different types of housing ranging from shared corridor to 2 room apartments. However, what is available varies when you apply. Therefore, make sure to be out in good time.

Housing benefit

If you are under 29, you can apply for housing allowance via Försäkringskassan. Whether you can receive housing allowance and how much you can receive depends on your income, your housing costs and the type and size of your home.

Population register address

If you move to study at a university or college, you must be registered at your place of study. The basic rule is that you must be registered where you live, i.e. where you spend most nights. With an e-identification you can use the Swedish Tax Agency's e-service to make a notification of move, quickly and easily.

Forwarding of mail

Order a forwarding service if you want to make sure that all your letters arrive at your new address.

Home insurance

Contact an insurance company and think wisely. If you accidentally spill your coffee on your computer or drop your phone, accidental damage insurance is a good idea.

Membership of the student union

Membership in the Student Union gives you the opportunity to influence and participate in the Student Union's activities. In addition, you get to take advantage of the Student Union's member-exclusive discounts! Become a member NOW

Student portals

The Student Portal is one of your most important tools during your studies. It's where you'll find your timetable, information on course materials and more. It is also where you register for each course.

MIUN tag

The MIUN tag has several functions:

- Access: The Miun tag acts as your access card in the card readers at the entrances and gives you access to the premises you need to access, depending on where you study or where you are employed.

- Printouts: The Miun tag also works to retrieve your printouts on our printers.

- ID document: The Miun tag will serve as an internal ID document for Mid Sweden University students and staff, confirming that you have a valid access to the university's premises, functions and services. The service will be launched in 2024.

Register for a course

You must register for each new course to receive funding, access the learning management system and receive credits for the course. You can register for a course at the earliest two days before it starts.

Education and training curricula

Education and course syllabuses are important legal documents that can be said to constitute a contract between you as a student and the institution, specifying what you as a student can expect your education to contain, but also what requirements are placed on you as a student to be able to complete the education.

I curriculum provides detailed information about your programme, including the objectives of the programme, the main structure of the programme, the courses included and the degree to which the programme leads.

Each course has a syllabus. It contains information about the objectives, content, scope and examination of the course and the course literature. A teacher is obliged to follow what is written in the syllabus and the teacher can therefore not demand anything from you as a student that is not written in the syllabus.

Course literature

To succeed in your studies, you need to read a lot of course literature. There are many ways to manage long reading lists without breaking the bank.

Borrow

When you study at Mid Sweden University, you will automatically receive a library account about an hour after you activate your account to the student portal. You then use your student login to borrow and reserve books and to access library resources from home. The library has at least two copies of the required course books. You can also check if it is possible to borrow literature from students who have taken the course before. Check with the sponsors and keep an eye on notice boards and Facebook groups.
